Following my work starting to automate my Lab deployments I spent a bit of time creating the firewall for it. I took the opportunity to try and simplify the configuration like making it the NTP server and DNS Resolver for the lab but also to collapse some rules in to floating ones.

pfSense – Continuing to Break my brain
During the fun of building out another virtual environment to act as another remote site I realised that traffic was no longer flowing over my IPSec VPN once I set it up.
The initial issue was due to a mismatch between the configurations on my two pfSense firewalls which was quickly resolved and the tunnel came up after that. Once it was up though I realised that nothing was flowing over the VPN.

pfSense – Learning And Making My Life Harder !
I’ve been using pfSense as the firewall for my home virtual lab for many years and it has increased me knowledge of firewalls by giving me one to play with in my own environment. As a consultant it’s proved invaluable for me in my job as it’s allowed me to quickly test what ports are needed to be opened for various applications, work out routing roulette issues I’ve seen on site, and even simulate setting up Active Directory Domain Trusts over an IPSec VPN.
